Data migration planning

If data are to be migrated to new physical data environments, then the migration must be prepared carefully as losing information is expensive, if not fatal. As discussed in solution rollout (Chapter 5), the decision on big bang versus incremental migration has an impact on the whole rollout planning exercise.

While big-bang migration may either succeed or fail, the planning problem is focused on scheduling time to migrate the large volumes of data, during which time current operations must not be disrupted. However, incremental migration provides the opportunity to manage risk effectively, as it allows more flexibility in the rollout of the new solutions.
