The definition of downtime is also important when discussing High Availability and SLAs. For most modern information technology services, downtime is defined by the number of minutes for which the service is unavailable. There are, however, some vendors who exclude planned downtime, typically caused by a planned system maintenance or upgrade, from the calculation of service availability.
