An Azure subscription is a logical grouping of Azure resources for billing and access management purposes. While an Azure account gives you access to the Azure Billing portal, an Azure subscription gives you access to an Azure Management Portal, where you deploy Azure compute resources. You can have many Azure subscriptions under the same Azure account.
Note that your Azure usage will be billed per subscription. In a corporate environment, separating applications between subscriptions is the easiest way to provide a chargeback to the appropriate business unit.
