Google and Social Media Sites

Google is not sitting on the sidelines of the social media playing field. With its acquisitions of YouTube (the most popular video sharing site), FeedBurner (the most popular web feed tracker), and Jaiku (a microblogging site similar to Twitter), Google is making a statement regarding its interest in the social media domain. YouTube is by far Google’s most popular social media property, with tens of millions of daily video downloads.

Google indexes hundreds of millions of pages from its competing social media sites. Table 15-4 lists the Google index size for certain sites as of this writing. Facebook is currently by far the most popular social media site, followed by MySpace, Flickr, YouTube (owned by Google), and Twitter.
