RDF Schema (RDFS) provides a very limited set of inference capabilities that have considerable utility in a Semantic Web setting for merging information from multiple sources. This chapter takes the first step toward the Web Ontology Language (OWL) in which more elaborate constraints on how information is to be merged can be specified. A particular set of OWL constructs are selected to present at this stage. This set was selected to satisfy a number of goals that are presented in the chapter. This subset is of OWL RDFS-Plus, because a trend is seen among vendors of Semantic Web tools and Web applications designers for determining a subset of OWL that is at the same time useful and can be implemented quickly.
