Appendix C. Grading Systems and Abbreviations

There is no universally accepted grading system and language. Grading systems can vary widely for different types of items and collectibles. For example, most coin dealers and collectors refer to the American Numismatic Association’s grading criteria, which includes grades such as About Uncirculated (AU) and About Good (AG). You won’t find these elsewhere. If you are going to assign a grade to your item, you should have done enough research to feel confident in your assessment and use of the abbreviations and grades appropriate to your item; another option is to go to an expert and have him or her grade the item for you.
