When you connect to a computer, you normally specify it by a name such as “www.microsoft.com” or “FileSrvB.” However, computer names such as these are used only for human benefit. For a connection to be established to a remote computer, the name you specify must be translated into an IP address to which packets can be routed. In computer terminology, to resolve a computer name means to translate the name into an address, and the process in general is called name resolution.
