Chapter 32Trimodal audio power, Part I

(Electronics World, June 1995)

Intended title: A Trimodal Power Amplifier: Part 1

This project had its roots in a large number of requests to Electronics World for a PCB for the Class-A amplifier described in the last part of the Distortion In Power Amplifiers series; see Chapter 29. Rather than just using the original circuit, I took the chance to look closely at output stage voltage efficiency, and also to re-examine the input stage balance and noise performance. I added a safety circuit to prevent catastrophe if the quiescent-current control arrangements went haywire. A little thought showed that this could very conveniently double as a bias voltage generator that would allow the amplifier to be switched ...
