Chapter 7. The Power of Faces

GIVEN THAT THIS SECTION is devoted to aesthetics and beauty, it’s worth noting the unique benefits of introducing faces, even in as simple a form as avatars, into our online interactions.

Interface designer Joshua Porter made a curious statement on his blog: “The mere presence of others dramatically changes our behavior.” Deciding to explore this statement, and have a bit of fun in the process, I created the images at the bottom of this page. Perhaps more than any other visual element, faces carry with them associations (some positive and some negative) and can influence our perceptions and behavior in interesting ways.
