The animal featured on the cover of sed & awk, Second Edition is a slender loris. Lorises are nocturnal, tree-dwelling, tailless primates with thick, soft fur and large, round eyes. They are found in Southern India and Ceylon, where they live in trees, rarely descending to the ground. Lorises have been observed urinating on their hands and feet-it is thought that they do this to improve their grip while climbing and to leave a scent trail.

A small animal, the slender loris is generally between 7 and 10 inches in size and weighs 12 ounces or less. It subsists on a diet of fruit, leaves, and shoots and small animals that it captures by hand.

Edie Freedman designed the cover of this book, using a 19th-century engraving from the Dover Pictorial Archive. The cover layout was produced with Quark XPress 3.3 using the ITC Garamond font.

The inside layout was designed by Nancy Priest and Mary Jane Walsh. Text was prepared in SGML using the DocBook 2.1 DTD. The print version of this book was created by translating the SGML source into a set of gtroff macros using a filter developed at ORA by Norman Walsh.
