Recognize attacks and take appropriate action.

In April 2002, the Computer Security Institute (CSI) released statistics from the 2002 computer crime survey. The seventh such annual survey of large companies illustrates a growing trend in attacks on corporate networks. The following are some statistics taken from this report that surveyed 503 companies:

  • 90% of respondents (primarily large corporations and government agencies) detected computer security breaches within between April 2002 and April 2003.

  • 80% acknowledged financial losses because of computer breaches.

  • 44% (223 respondents) were willing and/or able to quantify their financial losses. These 223 respondents reported $455,848,000 in financial losses.
