The highly readable presentation of elementary cryptography by Sinkov [SIN66] is well worth study. A more precise and mathematical analysis is done by Konheim [KON80] and Meyer and Matyas [MEY82]. For historical—and foundational—reasons, one needs to know the works of Friedman [FRI76a,b,c]. See also the references for Chapter 2.

Schneier [SCH96] is an encyclopedia of cryptography that is both thorough and readable. Stinson [STI96] develops a course on serious cryptography. Smith [SMI01] presents a good overview of the AES selection process, and Landau [LAN00a,b] gives a good analysis of the challenges of DES and the advantages of AES.
