4 THE SECURITY ARCHITECT’S ROLE AND SKILL SET

As we have seen, the purpose of security architecture is to define the measures necessary to ensure that the IT environment appropriately protects the information assets and service delivery capabilities of the business, thus responding to the requirements set out in the IT security strategy. In principle, then, the security architect’s job is to specify these measures and oversee their successful deployment.

A more formal definition, taken from the CESG definition for information assurance architects, is as follows:

[The security architect drives] beneficial security change into the business through the development or review of architectures so that they:

  • fit business requirements for security; ...
