Lights, cameras, and lenses are the tools of portrait photography. Master your understanding of these tools so they become an extension of your vision—you can then devote all your attention to your subject, not your gear.

As cool new photo gear comes out, it’s hard not to get sucked in as online photography forums echo with Jack Nicholson’s classic refrain from Batman: “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”

My advice on gear is simple: Get to know it so well that you don’t have to think about it while shooting, so you know exactly what each piece of gear can do to get the image you want. Then put it out of your mind and focus your attention on what is in front of your lens.
