Approaching the inmost cave

For this stage, the ‘inmost cave' could be an analogue location but it may also be represented by a deep conflict, or even a depression, in which lies a terrible danger or internal dilemma that the heroine has not yet had to face. As the heroine moves toward the cave, she must make careful and final preparations before taking the ultimate leap into the great unknown. As the heroine crosses the Rubicon into the inmost cave, she may once again face the same doubts and fears she first encountered upon her call to adventure. At this juncture she may need to stop and reflect upon her journey thus far and the potentially treacherous landscape ahead of her to rediscover the courage required to continue into the future. This brief point of reflection and respite empowers us to empathise with what is at stake and the magnitude of the challenge or ordeal that is waiting around the corner for the heroine. This also exacerbates the tension and anticipation of the ultimate test.

• Inner journey: Preparing for a big change — on the Millennium Falcon, Obi-Wan teaches Luke about the Force.
• Outer journey: Approach the inmost cave — the ship is captured by the Death Star, and the group finds itself inside the enemy's stronghold.
