Crossing the threshold

The heroine is now ready to commit to the call to adventure. This odyssey could be a mental, spiritual or emotional journey, and can be a voluntary quest or the heroine may well be pushed across the edge into an extraordinary world. Either way, the heroine finally crosses the threshold between the ordinary world and the magical world of possibility. This threshold could be something as simple as leaving her cushy home for the first time in her life, or doing something she has always been scared of doing. The threshold involves a paradigm shift and a Crossing the Rubicon moment, which symbolises the heroine's commitment to her journey and whatever the future holds.

Moving from the ordinary world to the extraordinary world creates a paradigm shift both internally and externally. It requires the combination of a mental belief that something better can exist, and the willingness to commit to and invest in the actualisation of this change. While our heroine, Birgitta (and her ‘co-conspirator' Lars-Olof), has dabbled in the extraordinary world, she has had a tendency to retreat into the ordinary world, so while Luke's journey has inspired generations of Star Wars fans, it is at this transition moment in the real world where friction starts occurring in a very real way for heroes and heroines.
