Refusal of the call

While on the surface the heroine may be curious about the future odyssey, at the current phase she still has fears and doubts that need to be surmounted. Deep personal doubts, crossed internal wires and introspective mistrust will ensue, relating to whether she is up for the challenge, and consequently the heroine will refuse the call somehow. The odyssey may seem too gargantuan and too difficult, and the comfort of the ordinary world may seem to trump the road of dragons and demons ahead. As this would also be our own human response, through this hesitation we are able to bond more closely with the reluctant heroine.

Here's how this stage looked for Luke in Star Wars:

• Inner journey: Refusal of the call — Luke refuses to follow Obi-Wan.
• Outer journey: Reluctance to change — Luke refuses the call because he feels obligated to stay and help his aunt and uncle on the farm.

And here's how it looked for Birgitta:

• Inner journey: Refusal of the call — Birgitta refuses to engage fully in critical analysis of the store and her brand, and then refuses to join Anders at Pitti Uomo in Florence in January 2014 to explore new brands and opportunities for Georg Sörman that are aligned to the new strategy.
• Outer journey: Reluctance to change — Birgitta refuses the call because ‘somebody has to carry the milk' ...
