SINCE THE TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM, online workspaces have become de rigueur for teams. Typically, a team comes together for its first meeting—whether face to face or by conference call—and proceeds to talk about how it will share documents, track progress, and keep up to date when they’re no longer in one another’s presence. For most teams, these conversations go no further than mentioning what technology they’ll employ. "Use SharePoint," one team member might say. "Let’s have weekly conference calls," says another, and off they go to do their work.

This is not best practice. Technology alone does not produce results for teams. They also need good sociology, which is why Jeff Stamps’s and my motto has been, "90% people, 10% technology." ...
