Understanding the Importance of Backups

You have several things to consider when coming up with a backup plan:

I’m not just talking about your Scrivener files. Seriously consider backing up anything and everything you wouldn’t want to lose: photos, saved e-mails, important documents, resumes and job histories, tax returns, electronic receipts, and everything you’ve ever written.

I recommend both a local and offsite backup method. A flash drive works great for your writing projects, but it doesn’t do you any good if it’s turned to goo in a fire right along with your computer, or snatched with your laptop from your hotel room. An external hard drive might be able to store everything, but it’s subject to natural disasters and theft, as well.

Use local options, but look into something offsite, too. Check your Internet service provider to see whether they offer storage with your account. If not, you have plenty of online sites to choose from. Ask around, do some research, and think about what you need from a site before spending any money.
