It is a pleasure to be able to present this volume, which contains chapter-histories of a set of Indian science institutes founded in the years prior to Indian Independence, and which are functioning actively to this day. This volume is only a beginning: the work is far from complete. There are more institutes that qualify to be included, and I sincerely regret the omissions. My problem as the editor was to get writers to represent these old institutes. In several cases, their histories have not yet been written, they have also not been perceived. Science history is a newly emerging field, and within that broad field, institutional history is as yet at a rudimentary stage. This volume will hopefully take the subject further and inspire ...
