The Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine: Foundation to Opening, 1910–211

The inclusion of the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine (CSTM) in a volume dedicated to the history of the scientific institutions of modern India (1784–1947) is easy to justify, despite its obvious colonial overtones. At its founding, the CSTM added to a range of existing initiatives intended to develop medical science in the Indian subcontinent and represented the first school of tropical medicine at the periphery of the British Empire.
