After last chapter’s discussion of amplifiers, we have completed the lowest level of the Pentagon of Power. We know how motors work, and how to vary the speed of a motor with an amplifier. If we are building a winch, at this point it is sitting on the bench powered up with perhaps a temporary controller such as a knob and switch. We’re itching to get that machine working with a slick control system and write some cues, but before we can hook up a control system we must first figure out how to measure the movement of the machine.
