10.1. Introduction

The previous two chapters discussed models that show the effect of contention for hardware resources (e.g., processors, I/O devices, routers, and LAN segments) on the response time of requests to execute functions of an e-business site. Besides hardware resources, other resources, such as software resources (e.g.. threads of a software server, database locks, and semaphores), can add to the delay experienced by requests and transactions.
