Security is an important attribute of most information systems. E-business is a good example of an application area in which security plays an important role. There are many excellent books that describe in detail how security is implemented in e-commerce [5]. Our focus in this book is to show how the mechanisms and protocols used to support security may impact system performance. It has been reported by many that the throughput of Web servers can be significantly reduced when they have; to deal with secure sessions, which require compute-intensive computations [1] [7] [8].
