8   The information and content environment

8.1 Introduction to information and content analysis

In this chapter, we consider the characteristics of traffic and content access, and begin a process to determine whether these characteristics offer opportunities for obtaining performance benefits by cognitive adaptation (Figure 8.1). This will be based on a general expression of the characteristics of content access, and will yield models of the transport characteristics and the access probabilities, which will later be converted into information-theoretic measures. This chapter develops some general principles that will be later exemplified in several content-based models of network operation.
