We drove on, jogging north into South Dakota. I parked at the Post Office in Sioux Falls to collect my mail sent General Delivery. There were two letters, one the size of a small note card. The envelope was penned with a calligrapher's swirl. I opened it immediately.

It's been quiet without you and Harold. I wonder how your trip is going. My neighbor told me my phone's been ringing off the hook. ...
