In a typical SAP network infrastructure, WAN links create potential network bottlenecks (see Figure 11-8). A 64-Kbps WAN circuit provides 1/160 the bandwidth of a 10-Mbps Ethernet link. “Procure more bandwidth” is a common battle cry when discussing network performance. One step toward reducing latency through a network is to ensure that adequate bandwidth is available during peak traffic conditions. However, bandwidth alone does not always solve a latency problem, and increasing bandwidth to remote sites is often not a cost-effective solution.
