Each device attached to an IP-based network needs a unique IP address.
Multi-homed servers need a unique IP address for each network interface.
Cluster and load sharing solutions also employ unique virtual IP addresses.
Routers need a unique IP address for each port.
Use addressing only to encode topological, not organizational, information.
Limit IP subnets to approximately 500 nodes.
Allow adequate IP addressing room for future growth.
