Appendix B. Drupal Background

Drupal’s origins can be traced back to 2000, when Dries Buytaert and Hans Snijder, then students at the University of Antwerp, set up a wireless network to share a high-speed Internet connection. It quickly grew into a shared news website, and the software that Dries had worked on was released to others in January 2001 as Drupal.

It is interesting that the precursor of the Internet—ARPANET (1969)—also began as a way to share computer resources and files. One of the first applications added to DARPANET was email (1971).
