Chapter 12. Working with the Registry

The registry is a large centralized database of information for your computer. Every configuration setting for your system appears in the registry, along with your personal data (at least the data that you provide as input to the computer) and application settings. You’ll also find the startup information for your system in the registry; Windows XP reads this information to locate files used for services and other operating system features. In short, the registry is one of the most important parts of Windows to protect because without it, the system won’t run.
