Although firewalls were once tools for IT professionals, the rising hobby of network intrusion and the appearance of automated port scanners randomly searching for open ports on the Internet have necessitated the development of personal firewalls for single-user systems. Many contemporary Windows, MacOS, and Linux systems have personal desktop firewall applications designed to prevent access to specific ports and services on the system. Of course, an end-user client system typically doesn’t have the need to run a lot of network services, which makes the firewall seem redundant.
