Introduction

iTunes Match is, quite simply, awesome. The service offers a wide range of functionality: You can use it to wirelessly sync your music library to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. You can use it to access your entire music library on your Apple TV. You can use it to upgrade your low bit rate tracks to higher-quality audio files.

But the truth is, iTunes Match is also somewhat confusing.

How confusing? Well, Apple offers iCloud, iTunes in the Cloud, and iTunes Match. The latter two are each part of iCloud, although they are separate entities. Only iTunes Match requires that you pay an annual fee; the other two are free.
