Understanding Visitor Tracking

When it comes to website visitors, quality is just as important as quantity. Yes, it matters how many visitors you get, but it also matters where they come from, how long they stay, and whether they return or not.

To that end, most serious webmasters collect a lot of data about the visitors to their websites. This data is available from Google Analytics, and you can slice it and dice it in a variety of different ways.

The most basic visitor data is the raw count of site visits—how many times your site was viewed in a given time period. This one is simple to understand; the more visits you get, the better.
