Understanding Default Site Templates
Right out of the box, Windows SharePoint Services includes common site templates that can be used to create new sites. These templates include the most commonly requested site functionality for SharePoint and can be further customized after their creation. The types of site templates included in SharePoint are as follows:
Team Site— The Team Site template is one of the most common templates used to create sites. This template includes standard site items such as a shared documents library and Announcements, Event, Contacts, and Quick Links lists. The template creates a site with two zones for Web Parts—a larger left zone and a smaller right zone.
