Textual Metadata

Metadata can be in textual form, and SharePoint gives you the following options for the input:

  • Single line of text— One line of text of up to 255 characters can be entered. This helps limit the amount of text entered. It often makes sense to reduce the total number of characters that can be entered based on the kind of information you are expecting. For example, if this column is for a color choice, 25 characters are probably enough, so this setting will stop users from entering long strings of information.

  • Multiple lines of text— You can enter in the number of lines of text that can be input. The hard limit for the number of lines is 1,000, but it's hard to think of a reason to allow for more than 5 or 10 lines of information ...
