Q1:Are the files created by KOffice applications compatible with Microsoft Office files?
A1: No. KWord can read documents created by most versions of Microsoft Word, but KWord's saved files cannot be read directly by Microsoft Word. One way to get around this is to save your KWord documents in HTML format, which Microsoft Word can generally read without trouble.
Q2:Are any free alternatives to KOffice available?
A2: At the time of this writing, a team is hard at work on porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD, so hopefully it will be available soon.
