Backing Up Existing Systems

Before you can install FreeBSD, you will have to create a space for it on your hard disk, which will involve making some changes to the way your hard disk is currently set up. Although the program we will use to do this in the next hour can usually do this without causing you to lose data, it is still possible that a mistake could be made. Because of this, it is very important that you back up any important data that you want to keep.

Note that in general, you only need to back up your data. You don't need to back up programs or the Windows system itself because you will generally need to reinstall these anyway. Also, backing up all your programs and data would require a great deal of time and a huge amount of space ...
