Structured Query Language

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a standard language for retrieving records from databases. The standard is maintained by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and is supported by most major database vendors, including MySQL, IBM, Oracle, Informix, Sybase, and Microsoft.

You can embed SQL statements in your CGI programs that issue queries to databases and include the results in your Web pages. Because SQL is an open standard, your SQL statements will be portable so that they work no matter which database package you opt to use.
