A History of CGI

You might be wondering where CGI was created and why it is still the most widely used platform for developing Web applications.

One of the first Web servers to be developed was NCSA HTTPD. It was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, where most of the founders of Netscape worked (and also developed the Mosaic browser). One of the most important features of NCSA HTTPD was CGI, which was added to the server with the 1.0 release.

Because NCSA HTTPD was one of the first widely used Web servers (along with the CERN server), CGI became the de facto standard for implementing Web applications. CGI support was added to the CERN server (the original Web server) in version 2.15, back in April of 1994.
