Why Optimize Performance?

It may be too obvious a question to ask, but why should you bother to optimize performance at all?

Let's be honest, in many situations, performance—fast or slow—simply does not matter. You may be building a database that has a small amount of usage, and a fast development time for your application may be the most critical thing. In a “quick fix” situation, you may give database performance a low priority.

However, even systems that are initially quiet can become busy. It may be a database-driven Web site that gradually attracts more traffic, and slow performance will be very off-putting for users, especially if it degrades as traffic grows.
