Day 15. Administration

Today's lesson will look at how to administer a MySQL database. It will touch on a number of things, some of which you will study in more detail in later chapters.

Today you will look closely at mysqladmin, the principal tool for administering MySQL. You will be introduced to mysqldump and mysqlhotcopy, and briefly meet programs such as myisamchk. However, some of these deal with repair and maintenance and other topics, and so will be dealt with more thoroughly in other lessons.

  • The tools for administering MySQL

  • Looking at the status of a MySQL server

  • Setting MySQL server variables using my.cnf

  • The structure of MySQL's data directory

  • Backing up and relocating a database
