Some cheery news to start with: Microsoft’s new DirectPlay system is pretty NAT friendly. The bad news: Games that either don’t use DirectPlay or use a version of DirectX before version 8 typically exhibit the problems previously described.

Some application-aware firewalls are available; for example, Linux’s IPMasq function has modules to deal with some quirky applications. (See www.e-infomax.com/ipmasq/ for details.)
