File and Print Services

When most folks think about the common ways that people network and share files, they’re thinking of file and print services. Apart from things like Gnutella and other peer-to-peer file sharing services, this is the typical way users share a hard drive folder with other users, allowing them to map a drive letter to that folder and even modify files if the permissions allow.

File and print networking offers a simple basic file transfer service. Unlike the peer-to-peer programs, normal file and print usually offers

  • A reasonably complete security model, usually tied to some sort of directory service

  • File “seeking,” which allows programs to access slices of a file (called records) rather than an entire file
