Hardware routers are different from commodity PCs in one important way: They’re not a dime a dozen. So, although it’s easy to test out potential Windows or Linux changes on an easily built lab machine, it’s not quite as easy to do on a hardware routing platform.

Familiarity goes a long way toward avoiding real-time mistakes. If you can get a hold of the device before it goes into production, so much the better. Being familiar with the commands, error-reporting facilities, and configuration procedure of a device makes you much more able to handle problems as they come up during production.
