When I wrote this chapter for the first edition of this book, back in the stone age of 1998, UNIX varieties were many, and no one UNIX variety seemed to be dominant. Well, that’s changed. Linux is perhaps the most successful UNIX ever, with even nongeeks installing it in their homes and offices. The bad news is that Linux, like UNIX before it, also has many flavors. But the good news is, a lot of network innovations have come out of the UNIX melting pot, and we can expect that trend to continue—the Internet itself probably owes its existence to UNIX-based network inven-tions.
