Syntax

In most markup languages, tags relate to specific functions; for instance, the table tag specifically instructs a browser to draw its contents within a table. In XML, tags only label data. Function, such as presentation and appearance, is handled via another technology, such as an XSL or SVG processor. For instance, if you created a sample XML document for the news center graphic defining the weather in Philadelphia, you would create a series of tags describing the type of content it contained. As XML is used to store content, you are able to name your tags according to your needs rather than according to a markup language's preset names. Thus, one possible example of the Philadelphia weather document would be the following:
