If you have never wondered whether the modern world's use of acronyms is getting out of hand, consider the following.

Gtk stands for the GIMP Tool Kit.

GIMP stands for the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix, a recursive acronym that you can go on expanding forever without ever discovering the meaning of the G.

Don't worry; you don't have to be a GIMP user, or a GNU diehard, to use Gtk. It's just a spiffy general-purpose graphic toolkit for programmers. It works in Unix and Windows environments, and it interfaces nicely with Ruby. It's not considered a finished product just yet, especially for Windows, but it is still functional enough ...
