Gtk stands for the GIMP Tool Kit.
GIMP stands for the GNU Image Manipulation Program.
GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix, a recursive acronym that you can go on expanding forever without ever discovering the meaning of the G.
Don't worry; you don't have to be a GIMP user, or a GNU diehard, to use Gtk. It's just a spiffy general-purpose graphic toolkit for programmers.
