We've referred to Ruby as a “glue language” a couple of times, and now let's flesh out what that means. Today's material is a little more difficult than most of what we have dealt with so far, and none of it is really essential to learning the Ruby language, so don't despair if you have some trouble following along. But being able to interact fluently with the operating system and the facilities it provides can give you one heady feeling.
