Summary

Microsoft has a number of services that, in Windows NT 4, were separate components like MSMQ. With Windows 2000 and COM+, message queuing is built in to the operating system.

As the size and complexity of systems increase along with the need for around-the-clock service, the need to asynchronously process data increases. With a queuing process, services can be brought online and taken offline without affecting the rest of the system.

New protocols such as BizTalk and SOAP enable heterogeneous systems to interoperate using standard industry protocols like HTTP and XML.
