Creating a Data Map

Regardless of the complexity of your data, it's always a good idea to create a schema before you begin assembling a database on the computer.

A schema is a visual representation of a database, a plan showing the names of all tables and fields.

For a sample schema, you'll create a real-life paper-and-pencil map showing each table, illustrating how they relate to each other, and defining how each one receives input. Sit down at the largest table in your home or office and obtain the biggest piece of paper you can find. Some companies have special schema forms just for this purpose, whereas the rest of us make do with the deli paper off the sliced ham.
